Amazing DIY Snowflake Clay Ornaments, Which Do YOU Choose?

DIY Snowflake Clay Ornaments

This evening snowflake clay project was inspired by my snow loving friend Susan. YES, we are teachers so of course the occasional Snow Day is always a bonus when they happen! This year, we have almost reached February 1st without a single flake in the air! I thought I would make her these snowflakes kind of as a “lucky snow charm”. They are calling for flakes in the air this upcoming Thursday here in Northern Virginia, so maybe, just maybe these charms will help turn the flakes into a coating or even a few inches, enough for her to have her snow day! I’m not saying I don’t enjoy the snow day myself, but honestly, now that I have switched from public to private school, I don’t CRAVE them as much as I use to. 🙂 I’ll give it another month before I will be voting for “Let it Snow Somewhere Else.”

Clay Ornaments

You need a few items for this project.

Getting Started on Your DIY Snowflake Ornaments

Supplies to Get Started

You can purchase Polymer Clay from almost any craft store or Walmart. It comes in two different packages. Some that need to be oven baked and some that are air dry only. I prefer the clay that you bake just because I don’t want to wait for it to dry. Either will work.

Roll out your clay, squishing it first with the palm of your hand and then roll the rest out with a rolling pin. You can roll to any thickness that you prefer. If you would like a thicker snowflake, then there is no need to roll out the dough that much. Just think of it like a cookie! Remember though, the thicker the dough, the longer it may need to bake before hardening. Clay should feel hard to touch when removing it from the oven. This is how you know it is done. It’s HOT, but firm.

DIY Clay Snowflake Final Steps

  • Cut
  • Peel Away Excess Clay from around the Cookie Cutters
  • Place on Baking Sheet
  • Slip into the oven to Bake!

Baking Time

Place snowflake ornaments onto your baking sheet. Preheat the oven to 275. If you are going to be hanging these or using them as ornaments, be sure to use a pencil tip to make a hole through the clay BEFORE you bake them.

Bake for 15 minutes. You may need to leave them in longer if the clay is on the thicker side.
