Get Your Craft On! Quick and Easy Creative Holiday Flags

Get ready for some creative sewing! These holiday flags are so fun to whip up using just fabric scraps!

Do you have scraps of fabric laying around the house? These holiday flags are super easy to put together in no time at all. Honestly, I think I completed my first one in 20 minutes!

How to Get Started on Your Holiday Flags

First, the fun part! Picking out your fabric pieces! Now you may already have scraps of fabric laying around the house OR you may want to make a trip to my favorite, Joanne Fabric! I LOVE perusing the aisles for fabric that jumps out at me. So much to choose from and around the holidays they always have a large selection. I decided I would shop the fabric store since I wanted to make my flags 4th of July themed.

Get Started Cutting and Sewing

Listen, there is NO wrong way to craft these flags. The first time I made one it was total trial and error! I did however like the size I came up with. Here were my measurements. Keep in mind you can adjust to create smaller or larger flags.

For the main part of the flag, I measured and cut 8″ by 5″.

The “stars” section of the flag measured 2 1/4″ by 1 3/4″.

Getting Started

The first time I did this I folded the red fabric in half (the pretty side of the fabric facing together). I sewed around the outside edge of the fabric the entire way around leaving about an inch so I could turn the fabric right side out.

Next, I sewed around the entire outer edge again closing the open inch that was left for turning the fabric right side out.

My blue piece I layed in the upper left corner of the fabric and sewed that around the entire rectangle.

Hint, Hint! Fabric scissors work great for making a fun cut fabric piece!

Ok, now for attaching the wooden dowel. I folded over a tiny piece at the end of my flag making a straw like tube for the dowel to slide through.

A few things I learned from my first flag.

  1. Sewing the tube-like hole for the dowel would look “cleaner” if it was done before you added the blue “star” piece.
  2. Be sure to measure the tube-like hole so the dowel actually fits when you try to slide it through!
  3. Using decorative scissors on your fabric really adds a fun look!

Fun Ways to USE your Decorative Flags

  • Stick them into a centerpiece on your dining room table
  • Add them to a plant to give to a neighbor
  • Fourth of July party? Stick them into separate small vases for table decorations
  • Make tiny flags and add them to cakes or cupcakes
